Pilates is a unique method of conditioning designed to strengthen the entire body while simultaneously enhancing flexibility. Joseph Pilates, who developed this technique, was influenced by martial arts, gymnastics, and yoga, and integrated yogic principles such as the use of the breath and the mind/body connection into his work. In this workshop, we will practice some of his basic mat exercises, which emphasize the abdomen and lower back, and then integrate these concepts into a yoga practice. No previous experience of yoga or Pilates is necessary.
Cynthia Adams, M.A., is a choreographer-performer, who teaches yoga and Pilates along with other mind/body fitness and movement classes. She began studying yoga in 1993 and completed the Advanced Studies Program at the Yoga Room in 1998. Cynthia has used the Pilates method of training for self-rehabilitation and conditioning since 1986, and completed the certification program through the Physical Mind Institute in August 2001.
