Practice Focus on Backbends | with Mary Lou Weprin

Saturday, January 11th | 2-5pm
$55

Please join us for a rounded practice with a focus on preparations and sequencing towards Urdhva Dhanurasana.  We will work with various chest-openers, shoulder stretches, and back-body strengtheners to enhance our ability to lift up and out of the foundations of the arms and legs and truly open the front body in this pose.   We will practice various chair-supported preparations before lifting up into the pose from the floor, and for those who are ready, dropping back from standing to the wall or with partners to the floor.

Polishing the Mind with Asana Part I | with Michael Lucey

Saturday, January 25th | 2-5pm
$55

We know that yoga is about transformation. What is transformation, and how precisely does the practice of asana move us towards it? Drawing on BKS Iyengar's thoughts about Patanjali's Yoga Sutras 3.9 to 3.13,  we will investigate how our asana practice can contribute to the "polishing" that produces refinement and transformation. We will use the asanas to help us understand the sutras, and the sutras to help us understand our practice of asana. For this first of three workshops on this theme, we will work with standing poses, inversions, and backward extensions. (Each of the three sessions will be free-standing. You do not need to attend all three.)

Michael Lucey is a certified Iyengar yoga teacher at the Senior Intermediate 1 level. Michael stumbled into an Iyengar yoga class in England in 1982, while he was a student at Oxford University. From his very first class he has been fascinated by the many ways yoga can transform your relation to your body, mind, and breath. He has also made 11 trips to India to study directly with the Iyengar family at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute, most recently in December 2018. Michael is also a professor of Comparative Literature and French at the University of California, Berkeley, and served as President of the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States from 2014-2017.

Yoga Ropes | with Bridget Frederick

Saturday, January 18th | 2-5pm
$55

Curious about the Yoga Ropes Wall in Studio B? Going to be around for the MLK weekend? Add a little hang time to your yoga practice and experience the many facets of the Ropes Wall. This two-hour workshop will explore technique and poses, developing strength and confidence in weight shifting, balancing and getting off the floor. No prior Ropes Wall experience is necessary. Space is limited on the ropes wall, so please sign up in advance!.

Bridget Frederick’s classes aim to make yoga accessible to anyone who is interested in finding the relief, strength or stillness that yoga can. With a strong focus on anatomy, balance and core strength, there’s always a new direction and challenge for her students to explore. In addition to yoga, her interest in aerial arts led to an exploration of yoga wall ropes, first developed by BKS Iyengar, who used them as a prop to support and intensify his asana practice. Bridget started co-teaching regular ropes classes and workshops with Sandy Zirulnik in 2017. The support of the ropes wall can bring a fresh perspective and understanding of the asanas, playing with gravity and the way our bodies can exist within it at different angles than we are used to.
