This class is open to all levels and all bodies. We will focus on alignment and building strength, particularly in the basic standing poses, but investigate other possibilities, all with a sense of humor and play. Elizabeth Costello is a graduate of The Yoga Room’s Advanced Studies Program, and continues to study with GayWhite, Ada Lusardi, and Mary Lou Weprin. She has had a physical practice for more than twenty years, including many styles of yoga, as well forays into dance and physical theater. She works to help students use the asana practice as a means to cultivate self-awareness, heal, and deepen their experience of being alive and embodied. Prenatal Yoga | with Deborah Saliby

Prenatal yoga is very popular because it offers so much to the pregnant woman. Greater strength, flexibility, increased stamina and energy and stress reduction are just a few things. Women are able to unhook from life’s daily demands, find community and make friends which can last a lifetime.

Deborah Saliby, a certified Iyengar yoga teacher, originally received her yoga teacher training at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco graduating in 1982. Through the years Deborah went on to study and practice different forms of meditation and healing, Hypnotherapy and Hypnosis for Birthing. In 2011 she attended graduate school and earned a teaching credential as an Education Specialist for severely handicapped children for whom she now teaches full time. She teaches part time Iyengar yoga classes, beginner to intermediate levels. She specializes in yoga for pregnancy and yoga for back care. Restorative Yoga  | with Bonne Maeda
Wednesdays, 4:00-5:30pm

Restorative Yoga is an ongoing class that focuses on gentle supported poses to help you release into a deep state of relaxation. Practiced in conjunction with breathing awareness exercises, these restorative poses are beneficial for anyone recovering from illness, injury, or stress. Everyone is welcome: no previous yoga experience is necessary.

Bonnie Maeda is a registered nurse, and teaches Iyengar-based yoga poses. Her classes are appropriate for individuals healing from an injury, coping with a chronic illness, or anyone else who prefers a gentle approach to their yoga practice. Monthly Saturday Restoratives  | with Bonne Maeda
One Saturday per month, 3–5 pm | $22
September 14th, October 19th, November 23rd, December 14th

These two-hour restorative practices begin in Savasana with breathing and body awareness; then continue with gentle stretches on the mat. The restorative poses that follow will be held longer to support the relaxation response. No yoga experience is necessary. Drop-ins are welcome.

She is certified by the Arthritis Foundation and also as an “Advanced Relax and Renew” teacher from Judith Hanson Lasater’s program. Her approach is gentle yoga for health and healing as well as restorative yoga to promote relaxation and manage stress. She believes in the benefits of yoga for every age, body type, and ability.

Yoga Movement Classes  | with Gay White

Yoga Movement is a flowing practice using the form and precision of yoga alignment. In this mixed-level class we will move through a sequence of poses with inner strength, and work with posture, momentum, and breath through a balanced practice.m.

Gay White teaches yoga and is Director of The Yoga Room and a member of the faculty of The Yoga Room’s Advanced Studies Program. She has studied asana and pranayama from Donald Moyer since 1991 and at the Iyengar Institute in Pune, India. Gay’s many classes and workshops are dedicated to alignment and awareness in a safe and creative mixed-level learning community. Gay also leads yoga retreats and intensives locally and internationally. She has been making dances since 1975, and is director of the Yoga Garden Dancers, theyogagarden.org.

Yoga for Healthy Bones  | with Shari Ser

Sundays, 4–5:30pm

Do you have osteoporosis or osteopenia currently and want to practice yoga in a safe environment? Or do you want to prevent developing osteoporosis? If the answer is YES, then this class is for you! In conjunction with an ongoing Yoga For Osteoporosis study by Dr. Loren Fishman, The Yoga Room will offer an ongoing practice centered around the core twelve poses that are the hallmark of his current bone study. We will practice the series with variations to keep it interesting and fun. The emphasis will be on safe ways to practice yoga to build bone health. You do not have to be enrolled in Dr. Fishman’s study to join, but we welcome all Bay Area residents who are currently in his study.

Shari Ser, RYT 500, E-RYT 500, C-IAYT, (certified yoga therapist), certified Iyengar teacher (CIYT), has over 36 years of physical therapy clinical practice and experience teaching yoga for a wide range of medical conditions. Shari combines her expertise as a physical therapist and a long time yoga practitioner to make her classes safe and accessible to all students who want to practice yoga. Shari teaches level 1-3 classes and co-teaches a Yoga for Health class. Shari is a certified trainer in Dr. Fishman’s Osteoporosis method and teaches an ongoing Yoga for Healthy Bones class at The Yoga Room.

Yoga for 55+  | with Deidre O’Brien & Herta Weinstein, M.D.

Wednesdays, 11:00am-12:30pm

 

Yoga for 55+ is a gentle yoga program for seniors (or anyone with physical challenges) to enhance strength and flexibility. Poses will be modified to suit your individual needs. Anyone of any age is invited to join this class!

Herta Weinstein, MD, began practicing Iyengar yoga in the late 1970s, and in 1988 enrolled in the first Advanced Studies Program, which she has completed. Herta has been teaching yoga to seniors since 1995 at The Yoga Room, at community centers, and in private sessions.

The series fee will be prorated for students joining for a partial series. Reduced fees are available upon request for residents of senior housing, and members of senior centers and over-60 clinics. For more information, call Herta at 510-845-8724.

Yoga for Health  | with Bonnie Maeda and Shari Ser

Tuesdays, 3:00pm – 4:15pm

Bonnie and Shari provide a supportive environment for individuals who are living with a chronic health issue. The poses will be individualized to meet each student’s particular needs. This class is wheelchair accessible.

Tuesdays, 11:15 am – 12:30 pm | Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery (PWR! Moves) | $20


Beginning March 1, 2019: Fridays, 1:30 pm – 2:45 pm | Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery (PWR! Moves) | $20

This class is based on the PWR! Moves – an evidence based exercise program for people with Parkinson’s. It includes aerobic, strong, repetitive movements, agility, gait and balance training. It is designed specifically to push back against the symptoms of PD: postural issues, gait changes, voice changes, stiffness, slowness, fear and lack of confidence while moving.

Tuesdays, 12:45 pm – 1:45 pm | Chair Yoga & PWR! for People with P.D. | $20

The chair class offers yoga and PWR! movements that target posture, rigidity, slowness of movement, strength, and flexibility for people with Parkinson’s disease. Class also includes mindful breathing practices, and breath and body centered meditation to help counter the effects of stress, anxiety and mood changes often associated with PD.

Petra Fibrichova, C-IAYT is an IAYT (Niroga) certified yoga therapist and yoga instructor. She is a also a certified PWR! Moves Instructor. She offers yoga and PWR! instruction for people with PD through public and private classes. Petra is passionate about teaching her students how to use a variety of movement and mindfulness practices to increase their well-being and push back against their symptoms.
